Indonesia’s Deputy Minister Nezar Patria: AI Key to Driving National Digital Economy

Jakarta, April 19, 2025 — The Europe Today: Indonesia’s Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Nezar Patria, has highlighted the transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI) in advancing the country’s digital economy, calling on the younger generation to embrace AI innovation and lead Indonesia into the global digital era.

Speaking during a public lecture on digital transformation on Thursday, Patria urged students and educational institutions to enhance their expertise in AI technologies to avoid being mere spectators in a rapidly evolving digital world.

“We must prepare for the era of AI, which is approaching rapidly. Soon, everything will be powered by AI,” he said in a statement released on Saturday.

Patria underscored how AI and digital tools have become integral to nearly every aspect of daily life, from communication and productivity to commerce and governance.

“AI is already widely used. We simply give it instructions. It’s evolving to become more human-like. That’s why digital skills are so important in today’s world,” he added. “You can study communication, or any field of science, and integrate it with AI.”

Digital Economy Targets and AI’s Impact

Looking ahead, Patria projected that Indonesia’s digital economy could reach Rp5,000 trillion (over US$296 billion) by 2030, contributing up to 40 percent of the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP). He noted that AI alone is expected to boost productivity by 3.5 percent, positioning it as a key growth engine for the national economy.

“The government is responding to rapid global developments. President Prabowo Subianto has shown strong commitment to building digital infrastructure,” Patria said, highlighting the administration’s prioritization of digital development.

Indonesia currently boasts 80 percent internet penetration, thanks to ongoing investments in telecommunications infrastructure.

Call for Academic Leadership in AI

Patria stressed the pivotal role of universities and educational institutions in cultivating AI-ready talent.

“Universities must take an active role in developing talent. They shouldn’t just wait but must take the initiative. That way, we won’t be left behind. We won’t just be users, but leaders in the digital age,” he said.

As the country advances toward becoming a major digital player, Patria’s message serves as a call to action for all sectors — especially youth and academia — to embrace the potential of AI and help shape a future-ready Indonesia.
