Puan Maharani Reaffirms Commitment to Labor Rights and Welfare at International Labor Day Commemoration

Jakarta, May 2, 2025 – The Europe Today: Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Puan Maharani, has pledged to intensify support for government policies aimed at safeguarding labor rights and enhancing worker welfare. Her remarks were made during the official commemoration of International Labor Day held at the National Monument (Monas) in Jakarta on Thursday.

“We must strengthen government policies, regulations, and programs to realize the protection of labor rights, the creation of a safe and harmonious work environment, and a prosperous future for workers,” Speaker Maharani stated in her address.

She emphasized that Labor Day serves as a significant moment for reflection on the country’s progress in securing and advancing labor rights. This year’s theme, “Realizing a Welfare State,” underscores a shared national commitment to building a state that prioritizes the wellbeing of its citizens, particularly its workforce.

“A welfare state is one that has a pro-people welfare policy,” she said, adding that the DPR RI remains committed to supporting the government’s strategic agenda to create inclusive and sustainable welfare for all Indonesians.

Calling for collaborative efforts, Maharani urged all national stakeholders — including workers, labor unions, entrepreneurs, the government, and the legislature — to align their roles and responsibilities toward a unified goal of promoting public welfare.

“Workers are the backbone of our economy. Their dedication is the driving force behind Indonesia’s industrial and economic progress,” she noted, expressing heartfelt appreciation to workers across the nation.

In her speech, Maharani also encouraged the nation to turn the struggle for labor rights into a shared movement that advances justice, humanity, and prosperity for all Indonesians. She stressed that this collective commitment is crucial to establishing a fair, equitable, and dignified working environment.

The event was also attended by President Prabowo Subianto, who delivered a keynote address reaffirming his administration’s dedication to improving the welfare and protection of Indonesian workers.

International Labor Day is observed annually in Indonesia to honor the contributions of the labor force and to strengthen efforts in upholding workers’ rights in line with national development goals.
