Washington, D.C., May 2, 2025 – The Europe Today: U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday appointed Secretary of State Marco Rubio to concurrently serve as interim National Security Adviser and nominated current National Security Adviser Mike Waltz as the United States’ next ambassador to the United Nations.
The announcement was made via the former president’s official account on the social media platform Truth Social, according to media reports.
“From his time in uniform on the battlefield, in Congress and, as my National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz has worked hard to put our Nation’s Interests first. I know he will do the same in his new role,” President Trump wrote, praising Waltz’s record of public service and commitment to national security.
President Trump also confirmed that Senator Rubio would retain his current role as Secretary of State while temporarily assuming responsibilities as National Security Adviser.
“Together, we will continue to fight tirelessly to Make America, and the World, SAFE AGAIN,” he added.
The reshuffle comes amid reports from U.S. media that Waltz would be stepping down from his national security post. His tenure faced recent controversy after his office mistakenly included a journalist in a Signal group chat involving high-level discussions about potential U.S. military action against Yemen’s Houthi rebels.
If confirmed by the Senate, Waltz will succeed Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield at the United Nations, marking a strategic shift in the Trump administration’s foreign policy team as the campaign for the 2024 presidential election intensifies.
The dual appointment of Rubio reflects President Trump’s confidence in his senior diplomatic team as the administration seeks to recalibrate its international strategy amid evolving global challenges.
