Jakarta, May 13, 2025 — The Europe Today: Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Puan Maharani emphasized the urgency of resolving the Palestine-Israel conflict and strengthening inter-parliamentary collaboration during a series of bilateral meetings with international parliamentary leaders on the sidelines of the 19th Conference of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC), taking place in Jakarta.
“The resolution of the Palestine-Israel conflict is a key issue that demands our collective attention, including ending the war in Gaza and ensuring humanitarian aid access,” Maharani stated during discussions held at the DPR Delegation Room in the Parliamentary Complex on Tuesday.
The bilateral meetings were conducted with parliamentary leaders from Algeria, Bahrain, Oman, and the Czech Republic— the latter attending the PUIC as an observer nation. The dialogue underscored Indonesia’s commitment to global peace, regional stability, and the advancement of Palestinian independence.
In her meeting with Ibrahim Boughali, President of Algeria’s People’s National Assembly, Maharani underscored the historic solidarity between Indonesia and Algeria, recalling the strong support of Indonesia’s founding president, Soekarno, for Algeria’s independence movement which culminated in 1962.
“Indonesia and Algeria have a long-standing relationship rooted in shared struggles for decolonization and South-South solidarity,” she noted.
Further talks were held with Ahmed bin Salman Al Musalam, Speaker of the Bahrain Council of Representatives; Khalid Hilal Nasser Al Maawali, Chairman of the Oman Shura Council; and Jan Skopecek, Vice Chairman of the Czech Parliament Chamber of Deputies.
These meetings addressed a range of issues including international geopolitical dynamics, parliamentary diplomacy, regional resilience, and the strengthening of institutional governance frameworks among OIC and observer nations.
The 19th PUIC Conference is being held from May 12 to 15 at the Parliament Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, under the theme “Good Governance and Strong Institutions as Pillars of Resilience.” The conference coincides with the 25th anniversary of the PUIC since its establishment in 1999 and brings together 450 parliamentary delegates from 38 OIC member countries and 10 observer nations.
Speaker Maharani reiterated Indonesia’s firm stance on advocating for justice, multilateral cooperation, and peaceful conflict resolution—especially in addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and supporting the rights of the Palestinian people.
