Tehran, May 22, 2025 – The Europe Today: Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei announced on Wednesday that the fifth round of indirect negotiations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States will take place on Friday, May 23, 2025, in Rome, Italy.
The decision follows diplomatic consultations led by the Sultanate of Oman, which has been actively mediating between Tehran and Washington. Baqaei confirmed that Iran has accepted Oman’s proposal to convene the next round of talks in the Italian capital.
Speaking at a weekly press briefing, Baqaei emphasized the Islamic Republic’s unwavering commitment to defending the nation’s legitimate rights under international law. “The negotiating team of the Islamic Republic of Iran is determined and steadfast in pursuing the supreme rights and interests of the Iranian nation, particularly with respect to the peaceful use of nuclear energy, including enrichment, and the complete lifting of unjust sanctions,” he stated.
Baqaei added that Iran will spare no effort or initiative in securing these objectives through diplomatic engagement. The upcoming dialogue is expected to focus on narrowing the remaining gaps over Iran’s nuclear program and addressing the sanctions regime that has strained relations between Tehran and Western powers.
The previous rounds of indirect talks have been marked by cautious optimism, with mediators such as Oman and the European Union playing a central role in facilitating communication between the two sides. Observers will be closely watching the outcome of Friday’s meeting for signs of progress in reviving diplomatic momentum and reducing tensions in the region.
