Ethiopia and Pakistan Forge Closer Ties in Higher Education

Islamabad, May 30, 2025 – The Europe Today: Ethiopia’s Ambassador Plenipotentiary and Special Envoy to Pakistan, H.E. Dr. Jamal Bakir, held a meeting with the Chairman of Pakistan’s Higher Education Commission (HEC), H.E. Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed, to discuss bilateral collaboration in the field of higher education.

During their discussions, both sides explored strategic avenues for cooperation aimed at strengthening educational ties between Ethiopia and Pakistan. Ambassador Dr. Jamal Bakir outlined Ethiopia’s national roadmap to build a sustainable economy through investment in educated human capital. He emphasized the efforts led by Ethiopian Prime Minister H.E. Dr. Abiy Ahmed to promote modern technologies, including artificial intelligence, coding, and information and communication technologies.

The Ambassador highlighted Ethiopia’s “5 Million Coders” initiative as a key example of the country’s commitment to digital skills development and technological advancement. He stressed that these efforts are critical to positioning Ethiopia as a knowledge-driven economy.

Chairman Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed expressed Pakistan’s interest in expanding cooperation with Ethiopia in areas where Pakistan holds global expertise, including technology, medicine, engineering, and agriculture. He commended Ethiopia’s focus on technological innovation and welcomed the opportunity to share Pakistan’s academic strengths.

The meeting concluded with a mutual agreement to enhance collaboration in improving education quality and academic standards. The two sides committed to advancing joint efforts in curriculum development, educational policy planning, scholarships, training programs, and institutional partnerships.

The dialogue marks a significant step in fostering closer ties between Ethiopia and Pakistan, centered on shared goals in higher education and innovation-led growth.
