China Reaffirms Commitment to Mediation and Multilateralism in Talks with Pakistan at IOMed Signing Ceremony

Hong Kong, May 31, 2025 – The Europe Today: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi reaffirmed China’s commitment to multilateralism and peaceful dispute resolution during a meeting with Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar on Friday. The bilateral meeting took place on the sidelines of the signing ceremony for the Convention on the Establishment of the International Organization for Mediation (IOMed).

Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, stated that China is ready to work with Pakistan and other like-minded nations to fully harness the unique strengths of the IOMed. He emphasized that the new organization will offer a voluntary, efficient, and inclusive platform for resolving international disputes and safeguarding peace, stability, fairness, and justice, particularly for countries in the Global South.

Minister Wang further expressed China’s intention to collaborate closely with member states to enhance the IOMed’s function as an innovative and practical mechanism for international mediation.

Deputy Prime Minister Dar welcomed China’s initiative to establish the IOMed, describing it as timely and a significant contribution to strengthening the multilateral system. He praised China’s leadership in promoting alternative mechanisms for conflict resolution and emphasized Pakistan’s support for multilateral diplomacy.

Referring to the recent informal trilateral meeting of the foreign ministers of Pakistan, China, and Afghanistan held in Beijing, Dar commended the dialogue as a success and announced Pakistan’s decision to accept China’s mediation proposal. He also confirmed that Pakistan has agreed to upgrade its diplomatic relations with Afghanistan to the ambassadorial level, signaling a major step forward in regional diplomatic engagement.

In response, Minister Wang welcomed Pakistan’s diplomatic move, stating that it would help improve bilateral relations, foster mutual trust, and strengthen cooperation between Pakistan and Afghanistan. He reiterated China’s support for peaceful dialogue and regional stability.

Looking ahead, Wang Yi expressed China’s full support for Pakistan as it assumes the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council in July, voicing confidence in Pakistan’s ability to make constructive contributions to international peace and security.

The establishment of the IOMed is seen as a landmark initiative aimed at enhancing peaceful dispute resolution globally, with a special focus on the needs and interests of developing countries.
