New York, May 31, 2025 – The Europe Today: Senior leaders of the United Nations have praised Vietnam’s active engagement and constructive contributions to the organisation’s key pillars during farewell meetings with Ambassador Đặng Hoàng Giang, who is set to conclude his tenure as Vietnam’s Permanent Representative to the UN.
Ambassador Giang paid courtesy visits to President of the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly Philemon Yang and UN Secretary-General António Guterres on May 21 and 27, respectively.
During their meeting, President Yang congratulated Vietnam on its recent socio-economic and diplomatic achievements. He commended the country’s significant contributions to the UN’s three core pillars—peace and security, sustainable development, and the promotion of human rights. He also expressed his sincere gratitude to the Vietnamese Mission and Ambassador Giang for their strong support for the priorities of the General Assembly President’s agenda.
In his discussions with Ambassador Giang, Secretary-General Guterres conveyed his high appreciation for Việt Nam’s increasingly important role within the UN system. He acknowledged the diplomat’s personal dedication to advancing cooperation and fostering consensus among member states. Guterres highlighted that Việt Nam’s recent initiatives have garnered widespread support, reflecting both their alignment with global priorities and their reinforcement of multilateralism.
The Secretary-General reaffirmed his desire to visit Vietnam again and expressed confidence that relations between the United Nations and Vietnam would continue to grow stronger, with the country further enhancing its standing in global forums.
In response, Ambassador Giang expressed profound gratitude for the support extended by both the Secretary-General and the General Assembly President to Việt Nam and its Permanent Mission throughout his more than three years of service in New York.
He reiterated Vietnam’s steadfast commitment to multilateralism and affirmed the country’s willingness to make increasingly substantive contributions to the UN’s efforts in maintaining international peace and security, promoting sustainable development, and addressing global challenges effectively.
