China and Spain Reaffirm Commitment to Strengthening Comprehensive Strategic Partnership

Madrid, June 12, 2025 – The Europe Today: Chinese Vice President Han Zheng and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez reaffirmed their countries’ commitment to deepening the China–Spain comprehensive strategic partnership during a meeting held in Madrid on Wednesday.

Reflecting on Prime Minister Sánchez’s recent visit to China in April — his third in three years — Vice President Han emphasized the steady development of bilateral relations and the importance of advancing mutually beneficial cooperation. He underlined both nations’ shared commitment to preserving the free trade order and promoting international fairness and justice, highlighting the strategic significance of China–Spain ties in fostering global stability and prosperity.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Spain. Han stated that China is ready to seize this milestone as an opportunity to further implement the consensus reached by the two countries’ leaders. He expressed China’s readiness to maintain high-level exchanges, deepen political mutual trust, expand pragmatic cooperation, and enhance coordination in multilateral platforms such as the United Nations and the World Trade Organization.

“In a time of global uncertainty, China and Europe must enhance solidarity, uphold multilateralism, and preserve free trade,” Han noted. “Such cooperation benefits both sides and contributes to stabilizing the global economy.”

Vice President Han also expressed hope that Spain would continue to play a constructive role in advancing stable and sustainable relations between China and the European Union, particularly as the 50th anniversary of China–EU diplomatic relations approaches.

Prime Minister Sánchez welcomed the Chinese delegation and acknowledged the enduring value of China’s commitment to multilateralism at a time when unilateralism and protectionism threaten the global order. He stressed that no country benefits from tariff wars and reaffirmed Spain’s and the EU’s opposition to unilateral trade measures.

“Spain and the European Union are aligned with China in supporting the multilateral trading system,” Sánchez said. “We are committed to working with China to uphold international trade norms and global cooperation.”

The Spanish leader reiterated his government’s adherence to the one-China policy and extended a warm welcome to increased Chinese investment in Spain, expressing particular interest in enhancing economic ties in key sectors.

He also confirmed Spain’s readiness to actively contribute to the development of constructive and forward-looking China–EU relations.

The meeting underscored both sides’ shared vision for enhanced bilateral and multilateral cooperation and laid a solid foundation for the continued growth of the China–Spain comprehensive strategic partnership in the years ahead.
