Berlin, June 15, 2025 – The Europe Today: German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has expressed cautious optimism over efforts to ease the rising tensions between Iran and Israel, saying he is “hopeful of achieving a better situation in the next few days.”
Speaking from Qatar during an interview with Germany’s ARD public broadcaster, Wadephul emphasized the importance of diplomatic engagement across the region. “We are asking those we meet in the Middle East to talk to Iran,” he said, while noting that Germany continues to hold discussions with Israel in parallel.
The remarks followed Wadephul’s meeting with Qatari Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani, where both sides discussed regional stability and avenues for reducing the risk of further escalation.
According to Qatari media, the Gulf state condemned Israel’s recent strike on Iranian territory, calling it a “flagrant violation of Iran’s sovereignty and security.” The condemnation underscores growing concern in the region over the possibility of a broader conflict.
Wadephul stressed that the goal of his diplomatic mission is to “find out where a compromise can be found, where there is a basis for talks on both sides.”
As part of his tour, the German foreign minister is also scheduled to meet with Oman’s Foreign Minister on Sunday. Oman has played a key mediating role in indirect talks between Iran and the United States concerning Iran’s nuclear program, making it a potential bridge in the ongoing efforts for regional de-escalation.
Wadephul’s Middle East trip comes amid heightened international scrutiny and calls for restraint, as diplomatic channels attempt to contain what could become a volatile confrontation with far-reaching consequences.
