Strengthening Romania-Pakistan Parliamentary Diplomacy: Ambassador Dan Stoenescu’s Engagements with the Senate of Pakistan and the Parliamentary Friendship Group

Islamabad, June 17, 2025 – The Europe Today: Today, His Excellency Dan Stoenescu, Ambassador of Romania to Pakistan, held a bilateral meeting with the Chairman of the Senate of Pakistan, His Excellency Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani. The discussions focused on enhancing parliamentary diplomacy, expanding sectoral cooperation, and identifying new avenues for collaboration in education, climate action, and regional stability. On this occasion, Ambassador Dan Stoenescu, together with Consul General Claudiu Cucu, were guests of honor in the plenary session of the Senate during the budget debates, where they were formally recognized by the Chairman of the Senate in front of all members present. Their presence underscored the strong interest in developing inter-parliamentary ties and symbolized the growing importance of Romania-Pakistan relations. Following the meeting, Ambassador Stoenescu was the guest of honor at a lunch in the Parliament hosted by Senator Rana Mahmood-ul-Hassan, which brought together senators, members of the National Assembly, and prominent political and cultural personalities. The gathering provided an ideal setting for informal dialogue and further reinforced the interpersonal and institutional links that underpin the bilateral partnership.

The same day, Ambassador Stoenescu participated in an important session of the Pakistan-Romania Parliamentary Friendship Group at the Senate of Pakistan, under the convener-ship of Senator Zamir Hussain Ghumro, reaffirming the commitment of both countries to deepening bilateral relations through parliamentary diplomacy. The Ambassador emphasized the crucial role of inter-parliamentary dialogue in fostering mutual understanding and collaboration across political, economic, and cultural spheres. He also underlined the importance of establishing a direct institutional connection with the Romanian-Pakistani Parliamentary Friendship Group to support comprehensive and results-oriented bilateral dialogue with the Senate of Romanie, the upper house of the Romanian Parliament.

During the session, Ambassador Stoenescu presented a broad range of proposals aimed at enhancing trade and economic ties, with a focus on joint ventures in sectors such as IT, agriculture, renewable energy, and infrastructure. He highlighted Romania’s potential contributions to Pakistan’s initiatives and stressed the importance of utilizing the EU’s GSP+ framework to increase bilateral trade. The Ambassador also discussed opportunities for defense and security cooperation, including police collaboration to combat illegal migration. Cultural and academic exchanges were also emphasized, including the establishment of Romanian and Urdu language chairs, student exchange programs, and cultural festivals. His Excellency reiterated Romania’s support for the Pakistani diaspora, called for high-level visits between both countries, and proposed deeper parliamentary cooperation to promote sustainable and inclusive growth in bilateral relations.
