St. Petersburg, June 20, 2025 – The Europe Today: Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday reaffirmed the strengthening of bilateral relations between Indonesia and Russia during a high-level meeting at the historic Konstantinovsky Palace in St. Petersburg.
President Prabowo conveyed his appreciation for Russia’s steadfast support in accelerating Indonesia’s full membership in the BRICS group, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and other new emerging economy members.
“I am very grateful for Russia’s support in securing Indonesia’s full membership in BRICS in a very short time,” President Prabowo stated during his talks with President Putin.
He further highlighted the upward trajectory of Indonesia–Russia ties since his inauguration as president in October 2024. “Our relationship continues to grow. Senior Russian officials have visited Indonesia, and I’ve also had the opportunity to meet Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov earlier this year,” he added.
President Putin warmly welcomed the Indonesian leader, emphasizing Russia’s readiness to further advance cooperation in key strategic sectors. “We have many opportunities and great potential for cooperation,” President Putin said, particularly referencing areas such as defense and space technology.
He also expressed optimism that Indonesia’s BRICS membership would provide meaningful contributions to the bloc’s collective economic and geopolitical initiatives.
The bilateral engagement commenced with a 10-minute one-on-one meeting (tête-à-tête) between the two leaders, followed by an extended meeting involving high-ranking officials from both sides.
President Prabowo was joined by a senior Indonesian delegation including Foreign Minister Sugiono, Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, and Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan.
