Hanoi, June 21, 2025 – The Europe Today: Vietnam and the United States convened an online ministerial-level negotiation session on June 19 to address remaining issues in ongoing discussions for a bilateral reciprocal trade agreement.
The session featured the participation of Vietnam’s Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyễn Hồng Diên, US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. The talks were conducted in a constructive and open spirit, focusing on key unresolved matters in the negotiations.
Minister Nguyễn Hồng Diên expressed appreciation for proposals put forward by the US side and underscored Vietnam’s expectation for the United States to give due consideration to areas of particular interest to Vietnam. He specifically highlighted the importance of equitable tariff policies and enhanced market access for Vietnam’s major export products.
He also proposed that both sides jointly develop practical and harmonised rules of origin tailored to the realities of global supply chains, thereby ensuring fairness and convenience for enterprises in both countries.
Secretary Lutnick and Representative Greer acknowledged Vietnam’s goodwill in tackling outstanding concerns, noting that such efforts pave the way for the United States to consider appropriate reciprocal tariff policies reflecting Vietnam’s development context.
The US officials reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the negotiations and achieving a sustainable, mutually beneficial agreement. Representative Greer added that the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) would soon complete and transmit the necessary documentation to facilitate continued productive dialogue between the two nations.
