Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Addresses OIC Council, Calls for Unity Amid Regional Challenges

Baku, June 22, 2025 – The Europe Today: Azerbaijan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jeyhun Bayramov, delivered a comprehensive address at the 51st session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), held on June 21 in Istanbul, Türkiye. The session gathered high-level representatives from OIC member states to discuss pressing global and regional issues affecting the Islamic world.

In his address, Minister Bayramov outlined the multifaceted political, economic, humanitarian, environmental, and security challenges emerging from escalating geopolitical tensions across the OIC region. Stressing the urgency of joint and coordinated efforts, he underscored the role of collective action in addressing these critical concerns.

The Azerbaijani Foreign Minister extended congratulations to Türkiye on assuming the chairmanship of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers and reiterated Azerbaijan’s full support for its leadership. He also referred to Azerbaijan’s upcoming chairmanship of the OIC in 2026 as a historic opportunity to further contribute to the unity and development of the Islamic world.

Minister Bayramov expressed deep concern over the alarming rise in Islamophobia, strongly condemning all its forms and manifestations. He emphasized Azerbaijan’s commitment to initiatives within the OIC aimed at countering this global threat.

Turning to the dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Bayramov called for immediate and decisive action, emphasizing the critical need to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people. He also voiced serious concern over the widening tensions in the Middle East, particularly in light of military operations against the Islamic Republic of Iran, advocating for the restoration of diplomatic dialogue grounded in international law.

Bayramov reaffirmed Azerbaijan’s steadfast support for the peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir conflict in accordance with the relevant United Nations Security Council and OIC resolutions. He welcomed the ceasefire agreement reached on May 10, 2025, as a significant step towards regional stability.

Addressing the humanitarian situation in Syria, Minister Bayramov underscored the necessity of continued support for restoration and reintegration initiatives to ensure long-term peace and recovery.

Highlighting Azerbaijan’s post-conflict reconstruction and peacebuilding efforts, Bayramov presented a detailed account of the nation’s achievements and remaining challenges. He pointed to the constitutional territorial claims made by Armenia against Azerbaijan and the continued reference to outdated structures like the OSCE Minsk Group as serious impediments to achieving a comprehensive peace agreement.

Furthermore, the Minister noted Armenia’s failure to fulfill its commitment to ensuring unimpeded communication between mainland Azerbaijan and its Nakhchivan exclave. He also emphasized that the rights of Azerbaijanis expelled from present-day Armenia – members of the Western Azerbaijan Community – continue to be grossly violated and denied, posing a significant obstacle to lasting peace and mutual trust.

Minister Bayramov concluded his remarks by reaffirming Azerbaijan’s dedication to the principles of international law, justice, and cooperation within the framework of the OIC, expressing hope for strengthened unity and resilience in the face of shared challenges.
