Macron Urges Iran to Return to Diplomacy Amid Escalating Regional Tensions

Paris, June 22, 2025 – The Europe Today: French President Emmanuel Macron has urged his Iranian counterpart, President Masoud Pezeshkian, to urgently resume diplomatic talks as tensions soar following recent airstrikes on nuclear-linked sites in Iran.

In an official statement released by the Élysée Palace, Macron expressed “deep concern over the gravity of the current escalation” during a telephone conversation with the Iranian leader. He emphasised that direct dialogue and diplomacy remain the only viable paths to prevent further deterioration of the situation.

The French president underscored the importance of Iran’s adherence to its international obligations, particularly those under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). He also called for Tehran’s full cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), highlighting the critical role of transparency and verification in safeguarding regional security.

Macron further stressed that the current volatility does not serve the interests of regional peace and urged all involved parties to show restraint and avoid actions that could trigger uncontrolled escalation.

The call comes in the wake of heightened international alarm over growing instability in the Middle East, following airstrikes reportedly carried out by the United States targeting Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.
