Indonesia, Russia Expand Strategic Cooperation in Higher Education

Jakarta, June 23, 2025 — The Europe Today: The governments of Indonesia and the Russian Federation have agreed to expand strategic cooperation in the field of higher education, following the recent official visit of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto to Saint Petersburg, Russia.

Indonesian Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Brian Yuliarto, announced the development in an official statement issued on Monday. “Indonesia and Russia have agreed to foster strategic cooperation in higher education. I signed the cooperation agreement with Russian Minister of Science and Higher Education Valery Falkov in Saint Petersburg,” Minister Yuliarto stated.

The agreement was exchanged in the presence of President Prabowo Subianto and Russian President Vladimir Putin, underscoring the high-level commitment of both nations to deepen ties across science, research, and culture.

The memorandum of understanding aims to facilitate broader collaboration between the two countries, including the exchange of students, lecturers, and researchers; the provision of scholarships; the organization of joint academic conferences; and the establishment of partnerships between higher education institutions.

“Higher education must be a bridge connecting civilizations. Hopefully, this collaboration will open up more avenues for young people from both countries to study, innovate, and contribute to shaping a better future,” Minister Yuliarto emphasized.

He also expressed hope that the partnership would strengthen the research and higher education ecosystem in both nations. “Our ministry will encourage Indonesian higher education institutions to actively follow up on this agreement through concrete partnerships, collaborative programs, and meaningful contributions to education diplomacy, thereby reinforcing Indonesia’s standing in global academic networks,” he said.

The higher education agreement was one of several documents exchanged during the visit, which also included cooperation deals in the fields of investment, transportation, and mass media development.

In addition to witnessing the signing of these documents, President Prabowo Subianto and President Vladimir Putin signed a Declaration on Strategic Partnership between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Indonesia, marking a new phase of bilateral relations rooted in mutual trust and comprehensive cooperation.
