Prabowo Leads Groundbreaking of EV Battery Plant in Karawang; Majority of Buyers Domestic: IBC

Karawang, June 30, 2025 – The Europe Today: The majority of buyers for electric vehicle (EV) batteries produced at the Integrated Electric Battery Industry Ecosystem project in Karawang, West Java, will be domestic companies, according to Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC) CEO Toto Nugroho.

Nugroho made the statement following the groundbreaking ceremony of the battery factory, which was officiated by President Prabowo Subianto on Sunday.

The facility is being developed through a strategic consortium comprising IBC, state-owned mining company PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (ANTAM), and Chinese battery manufacturer Ningbo Contemporary Brunp Lygend Co. Ltd. (CBL).

While the factory is primarily aimed at meeting the domestic demand for EV batteries, Nugroho confirmed that the facility also targets exports to several international markets including Japan, India, and the United States.

“If we look at the current conditions, around 30 percent of the production will be exported. However, this figure may change from year to year,” Nugroho said.

The Karawang battery factory is one of six integrated projects under the consortium’s broader plan. The remaining five projects are scheduled for development in East Halmahera, North Maluku.

Also speaking at the event, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia stated that the facility is designed to have an annual production capacity of 15 gigawatt hours (GWh), sufficient to power approximately 300,000 electric vehicles.

He further noted that the plant will feature a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to support the storage of solar energy, enhancing its role in the renewable energy ecosystem.

The project marks a significant milestone in Indonesia’s push to become a global hub for the electric vehicle supply chain, leveraging the country’s rich nickel reserves and strategic partnerships with global industry players.
