Speakers of Azerbaijani and Uzbek Parliaments Hold Meeting in Khiva

Khiva, July 2, 2025 – The Europe Today:  Speaker of the Milli Majlis (Parliament) of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Sahiba Gafarova, met with Tanzila Narbayeva, Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan, in Khiva, Uzbekistan, on the margins of the First Uzbekistan–Azerbaijan Interparliamentary Forum.

The meeting emphasized the significance of the inaugural Forum as a vital mechanism for fostering sustained and productive cooperation between the two legislative bodies. Both sides expressed confidence that the discussions and proposals put forth during the event would contribute to further strengthening interparliamentary relations and advancing shared priorities.

The parliamentary leaders hailed the high level of bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan, underscoring that these ties are deeply rooted in common historical, religious, and cultural values. They praised the pivotal role of the Presidents of both countries in elevating bilateral ties to a new strategic phase, noting that regular high-level contacts and reciprocal visits have cemented cooperation across various fields.

Gafarova and Narbayeva underlined the importance of parliamentary diplomacy in consolidating this bilateral partnership. They noted that interactions between deputies and ongoing institutional collaboration significantly contribute to the comprehensive development of relations.

Chairperson Narbayeva described the holding of the Interparliamentary Forum as a clear reflection of the strength of relations between the legislative bodies of Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan. Both leaders highlighted the importance of the signed “Agreement on Cooperation between the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan”, as well as the accompanying “Roadmap” for Interparliamentary Cooperation, which demonstrate the mutual commitment to enhancing bilateral parliamentary engagement.

The meeting also featured an exchange of views on other issues of mutual interest, with both sides reaffirming their intention to continue close dialogue and collaboration at the legislative level to further solidify the strategic partnership between Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan.
