Shusha, July 5, 2025 – The Europe Today: In a landmark development, Pakistan and Azerbaijan on Friday signed a $2 billion investment agreement aimed at bolstering economic cooperation between the two brotherly nations. The signing ceremony took place in Shusha, on the sidelines of the 17th Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) Summit.
The agreement was signed in the presence of Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar and Azerbaijani Economy Minister Mikayil Jabbarov formally inked the deal, which marks a significant step forward in the growing economic partnership between Islamabad and Baku. Members of the Pakistani delegation were also present at the occasion.
This strategic agreement follows a cordial meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Khankendi. A more comprehensive and final version of the agreement is expected to be signed during President Aliyev’s forthcoming visit to Pakistan.
The agreement elevates bilateral investment and trade ties to an unprecedented level and is poised to serve as a milestone in strengthening economic relations and deepening the bonds of fraternity between the two countries. Prior to the summit, key components of the agreement were finalized through consultations among the Pakistani diplomatic mission, the Deputy Prime Minister, the Foreign Minister, and relevant Azerbaijani counterparts.
Speaking to media in Shusha, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed gratitude to President Ilham Aliyev for Azerbaijan’s trust and investment in Pakistan’s economy. He described the agreement as a foundational step toward significantly increasing future investments and enhancing mutual cooperation across various sectors.
“We are thankful to the President of Azerbaijan for this generous and timely investment in Pakistan,” the Prime Minister stated. “This agreement is a reflection of our growing economic diplomacy and Azerbaijan’s confidence in Pakistan’s economic potential.”
The Prime Minister further emphasized that during the ECO Summit, member states agreed to expand collaboration in trade, investment, water resources, and other critical sectors. He also noted the collective resolve of the member nations to intensify joint efforts in combating the challenges of climate change, particularly the melting of glaciers.
The signing of the investment agreement signals a new chapter in Pakistan-Azerbaijan relations, with promising prospects for economic integration and regional development.
