Morocco Re-Elected to FAO Council, Extends Mandate Through 2029

Mrirt, July 06, 2025 – The Europe Today: Morocco has secured a renewed mandate on the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Council, extending its membership until 2029 following a vote held during the 44th session of the FAO Conference in Rome, which took place from June 28 to July 4.

The re-election reinforces Morocco’s position as a key African voice within the 49-member FAO Council. Ambassador Youssef Balla, Morocco’s Permanent Representative to UN agencies in Rome, will continue representing the Kingdom on the Council.

Morocco initially joined the FAO Council on June 30, 2023, with its first term set to conclude in June 2026. The newly confirmed term will begin on July 1, 2026, and continue through the end of the FAO’s 46th conference session in 2029.

The extension was granted following a vote of confidence by African member states, who acknowledged Morocco’s strong commitment to global food security, sustainable agriculture, and its ongoing support for small island developing states and least developed countries. The Kingdom’s active promotion of South-South cooperation within the African continent was also noted as a decisive factor in the endorsement.

The FAO Council functions as the executive body of the FAO Conference, tasked with directing and supervising the organization’s policies and activities between its biennial sessions. Its central mission is to ensure the continuity and effectiveness of FAO programs aimed at tackling global food and agriculture challenges.

Morocco’s re-election reflects growing international confidence in its constructive role in shaping food security policy, particularly across Africa. Since joining the Council, the Kingdom has worked to foster agricultural innovation, strengthen food systems, and promote regional cooperation amid escalating global concerns such as climate change, economic volatility, and geopolitical tensions.

The renewed term enhances Morocco’s influence in key multilateral forums and underscores its evolving leadership in advancing sustainable agriculture and food resilience on both continental and global scales.
