Hanoi, July 08, 2025 – The Europe Today: Vietnamese Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính held a bilateral meeting with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on Monday (local time) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on the sidelines of the expanded BRICS Summit 2025.
During the meeting, both leaders expressed their appreciation for the successful state visit of Vietnamese Party General Secretary Tô Lâm to Indonesia in March, which led to the elevation of bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership. They regarded this development as a significant milestone, paving the way for deepened cooperation between the two Southeast Asian nations.
Building upon this momentum, Prime Minister Chính and President Subianto agreed to enhance high-level exchanges and broaden engagement across all levels and channels. They also reaffirmed their commitment to the effective implementation of existing bilateral cooperation mechanisms.
Prime Minister Chính proposed the joint development of an action plan to operationalize the comprehensive strategic partnership for the 2025–2030 period. He emphasized the need to promote collaboration in key areas such as economy, trade, investment, agriculture, and emerging sectors including the digital economy, green transition, and energy.
Both sides agreed to expedite negotiations and the signing of a rice trade agreement, aiming to ensure stable, long-term rice exports from Vietnam to Indonesia and to contribute to Indonesia’s food security. The leaders also supported expanding market access for each other’s goods.
To this end, Prime Minister Chính affirmed that he would instruct Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade to work closely with relevant Indonesian authorities to promote mutual market openings.
The two leaders reiterated their commitment to working in close coordination with other ASEAN member states to advance multilateralism, solidarity, and ASEAN’s centrality. They stressed the importance of maintaining ASEAN’s united stance on the East Sea (South China Sea) and other regional and international issues of shared interest.
The meeting further reinforced the strong and growing partnership between Vietnam and Indonesia, highlighting their mutual resolve to advance regional peace, stability, and prosperity.
