U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio Marks 30th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations with Vietnam

Washington, July 13, 2025 – The Europe Today: On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between the United States and Vietnam (1995–2025), U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday posted a message on the social media platform X to commemorate the milestone and reaffirm bilateral ties.

“Thirty years ago, the U.S. and Vietnam began a remarkable journey from former foes to Comprehensive Strategic Partners. Today, we recognise this important milestone and reaffirm our commitment to advancing peace, prosperity, and security together for a free and open Indo-Pacific,” Rubio stated.

The normalization of diplomatic ties was officially announced by then-U.S. President Bill Clinton on the night of July 11, 1995 (U.S. time). Hours later, in the early morning of July 12 (Vietnam time), Prime Minister Võ Văn Kiệt made a corresponding announcement from Hanoi, marking the beginning of a new era in bilateral relations.

Over the past three decades, Vietnam–U.S. relations have steadily evolved, with significant milestones along the way. On July 25, 2013, the two countries elevated their ties to a Comprehensive Partnership, reflecting growing cooperation across multiple sectors.

The relationship reached a new pinnacle in September 2023, when U.S. President Joe Biden paid a state visit to Vietnam. During his visit, both sides issued a joint statement in Hanoi, officially upgrading bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for Peace, Cooperation, and Sustainable Development.

The upgrade signaled a shared commitment to deepening collaboration in key areas, including trade and investment, education, science and technology, innovation, defense, and people-to-people exchanges—contributing to regional peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific.
