U.S. Declassifies Over 230,000 Pages of Documents on Martin Luther King Jr.’s Assassination

Washington, July 22, 2025 – The Europe Today:  The United States has declassified more than 230,000 pages of documents related to the assassination of renowned civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., marking a significant step toward transparency in one of the most scrutinized cases in American history.

The announcement was made on Monday by U.S. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who revealed the document release through a post on the social media platform X, according to media reports.

“The documents include details about the FBI’s investigation into the assassination of MLK, discussion of potential leads, internal FBI memos detailing the progress of the case, information about James Earl Ray’s former cellmate who stated he discussed with Ray an alleged assassination plot, and more,” Gabbard said.

The move comes nearly six decades after King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1968 — a tragedy that sparked nationwide unrest and left a lasting impact on the civil rights movement.

The declassification follows a January 23 executive order signed by President Donald Trump — just three days after beginning his new term — mandating the release of all remaining classified records pertaining to the assassinations of former President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Dr. King remains an enduring symbol of the American civil rights struggle, remembered for his steadfast commitment to nonviolence, social justice, and racial equality. His iconic “I Have a Dream” speech continues to resonate as a defining moment in the movement for civil rights.

The release of these documents is expected to shed new light on the federal investigation into King’s assassination and potentially address longstanding public questions and conspiracy theories surrounding the case.
