Italy Supports Palestinian Statehood but Opposes Premature Recognition, Says PM Meloni

Rome, July 27, 2025 – The Europe Today: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has reiterated her support for the creation of a Palestinian state but emphasized that premature recognition without a viable process in place would be counterproductive.

“I support the creation of a Palestinian state, but recognition at this stage would be counterproductive,” Meloni stated, as reported by News Hub Consultants.

Meloni stressed that acknowledging a state that lacks tangible foundations could undermine efforts toward lasting peace. “I’ve said this multiple times, including in Parliament, to the Palestinian Authority, and to President Macron. Recognizing something that doesn’t yet exist on paper creates the illusion of a solution, while the real issues remain unresolved,” she said.

The Italian leader’s remarks come amid renewed international discourse on the issue of Palestinian statehood, with some countries advocating for immediate recognition. However, Italy remains cautious, advocating for a structured and sustainable approach that would lead to a real and functional two-state solution.
