Pakistan Partners with Ethiopia in Planting 700 Million Seedlings Under Global Climate Drive

Islamabad, July 31, 2025 – The Europe Today: In a significant demonstration of international climate cooperation, Pakistan has joined hands with Ethiopia in planting 700 million seedlings in a single day as part of the “Renewal Through Planting” campaign. This ambitious initiative, launched this year under the Green Legacy Initiative of Ethiopian Prime Minister H.E. Dr. Abiy Ahmed, aims to address global environmental challenges through massive afforestation efforts.

To mark Pakistan’s participation, a joint plantation drive and media briefing were held at the Ethiopian Embassy in Islamabad. The event drew a diverse audience comprising members of the diplomatic corps, senior government officials, parliamentarians, business leaders, religious scholars, youth representatives, media personnel, and civil society stakeholders.

H.E. Dr. Musadik Malik, Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, attended the ceremony as the chief guest. H.E. Hamid Asghar Khan, Additional Secretary (Africa) from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan, was present as guest of honor.

In his address, H.E. Dr. Jemal Beker, Ambassador of Ethiopia to Pakistan, elaborated on the goals of the Green Legacy Initiative—launched in 2019—which seeks to restore ecological balance, reduce carbon emissions and soil degradation, and enhance food security and sustainable development across Ethiopia. He noted that Pakistan’s participation in the “Renewal Through Planting” campaign is a testament to its dedication to bolstering ties with Ethiopia and tackling climate change through collective action.

The Ambassador also announced that a high-level delegation of Ethiopian officials and climate experts will soon visit Pakistan to participate in “Green Dialogues” and national plantation campaigns, further deepening environmental collaboration between the two countries.

Federal Minister Dr. Musadik Malik praised the Ethiopian Ambassador for his tireless efforts to promote green values and sustainable practices in Pakistan. He also commended Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed for his visionary leadership and global climate advocacy, citing Ethiopia’s Green Legacy and Yelemat Tirufat (Bounty of Basket) programs as exemplary models of climate resilience and innovation.

The event concluded with a joint call to action for nations worldwide to intensify efforts in combating climate change through sustainable, community-driven solutions.
