Malaysian King Sultan Ibrahim to Undertake Historic State Visit to Russia from August 5–10

Kuala Lumpur, August 3, 2025 – The Europe Today: His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, will embark on a historic state visit to the Russian Federation from August 5 to August 10, at the invitation of President Vladimir Putin, according to a statement issued by Istana Negara.

The visit marks a significant milestone in Malaysia-Russia diplomatic relations, as His Majesty will become the first Malaysian Head of State to conduct a state visit to Russia since the two countries formally established diplomatic ties in 1967.

“This visit also reflects the important role of the Malaysian monarchy in advancing the nation’s diplomacy,” the statement read.

According to Bernama, the state visit is aimed at further strengthening existing bilateral relations while exploring new opportunities for cooperation in key sectors, including trade, higher education, technology, innovation, and people-to-people exchanges.

Malaysia, as the incoming Chair of ASEAN in 2025, is expected to play an increasingly strategic role in enhancing regional cooperation, particularly in light of Russia’s longstanding status as an ASEAN Dialogue Partner since 1996.

During the Moscow leg of the visit, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim will be received with full state honours at the Kremlin, where he is scheduled to hold an official meeting with President Putin. A state banquet in honour of His Majesty will also be hosted by the President of the Russian Federation.

In addition to high-level diplomatic engagements, Sultan Ibrahim will visit key Russian institutions, including the Central Scientific Research Automobile and Automotive Engines Institute (NAMI) and the Tochka Kipeniya Technology and Innovation Hub.

Following his engagements in Moscow, His Majesty will travel to Kazan, the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, on August 8. Tatarstan is one of Russia’s autonomous republics and is home to a significant Muslim-majority population.

While in Kazan, His Majesty is scheduled to meet with Rais (Head) Rustam Minnikhanov of the Republic of Tatarstan and tour a helicopter manufacturing and assembly facility, further underscoring the visit’s focus on industrial and technological collaboration.

This historic visit is expected to chart a new course in Malaysia-Russia relations, reinforcing mutual trust and paving the way for deeper cooperation on bilateral, regional, and global issues.
