Rabat, August 4, 2025 – The Europe Today: Morocco has officially begun preparations for its 2026 legislative elections following directives from King Mohammed VI, as part of a concerted effort to ensure the process adheres to constitutional timelines and embodies the principles of transparency, inclusion, and democratic integrity.
In the wake of the King’s Throne Day speech on July 29, where he reaffirmed that the next legislative elections will be held on their regular constitutional schedule, the Ministry of the Interior convened two key meetings with political party leaders to discuss the roadmap for the electoral process.
In his address, King Mohammed VI emphasized the need for Parliament to adopt a new General Electoral Code for the House of Representatives before the end of 2025. He also entrusted Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit with overseeing the comprehensive and orderly preparation of the upcoming elections. The monarch specifically instructed that political consultations be conducted with all relevant stakeholders to foster a participatory and transparent electoral climate.
Political party leaders from across the spectrum welcomed the initiative, applauding the King’s consultative approach as consistent with Morocco’s long-standing tradition of managing key national milestones through dialogue and consensus-building. The meetings provided a platform for in-depth discussions on the general framework for the 2026 legislative elections, including legal, logistical, and political considerations.
Participants expressed a strong sense of responsibility and a shared commitment to making the elections a pivotal moment for reaffirming Morocco’s unique electoral model and its ongoing democratic evolution. Party leaders reiterated their support for upholding the Kingdom’s democratic values and ensuring free, fair, and credible elections.
Following the discussions, political parties agreed to submit their proposals regarding the electoral framework to the Ministry of the Interior by the end of August. The Ministry will review the proposals and coordinate with stakeholders to finalize legislative measures to be introduced during the upcoming autumn session of Parliament.
This collaborative and inclusive approach underscores Morocco’s continued dedication to strengthening its democratic institutions and enhancing political participation across party lines. The 2026 legislative elections are widely viewed as a crucial opportunity to reinforce the Kingdom’s democratic achievements and further consolidate national unity through an open and representative electoral process.
