Malaysia Reaffirms Unwavering Support for Unconditional Establishment of Independent Palestinian State

Malaysia

Cyberjaya, August 8, 2025 – The Europe Today: Malaysia remains firmly committed to the unconditional establishment of an independent Palestinian state, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan affirmed on Friday.

Speaking to the media after attending the 58th ASEAN Day celebration, officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Mohamad reiterated that Malaysia’s stance on Palestine is rooted in long-standing principles of sovereignty, self-determination, and non-interference.

“We want an independent Palestinian state, full stop. Once it is established, whoever governs it is the right of the Palestinian people, and we will not interfere,” he asserted.

The minister expressed Malaysia’s concern regarding the New York Declaration, adopted during the recent United Nations high-level conference on the peaceful resolution of the Palestinian issue. He noted that the declaration introduced preconditions for the formation of a Palestinian state, a move Malaysia finds inconsistent with its foreign policy.

“We have always supported an independent Palestine. But we are not comfortable with the New York Declaration and its outcome,” Mohamad stated.

When asked whether Malaysia would officially raise its concerns at the United Nations, Mohamad clarified that no formal discussions had taken place on the declaration. “There has been no official debate on the document—only a roundtable meeting. The final drafting was carried out by seven to eight countries without the full participation of all UN member states,” he explained.

Despite Malaysia being among the 122 countries that supported the proposal at the UN, Mohamad emphasized that the process lacked inclusivity and transparency.

The UN conference, held on July 31, concluded with the adoption of two major documents—the New York Call and the New York Declaration—both advocating a two-state solution. However, Mohamad criticized the documents for failing to confront the root cause of the decades-long conflict.

“Neither of these documents addressed the core issue, which is the illegal Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory,” he stressed.

Malaysia continues to champion the rights of the Palestinian people and stands resolute in its call for a free, sovereign, and fully recognized Palestinian state, established without external conditions or interference.
