Ankara, August 12, 2025 – The Europe Today: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has described the agreement reached in Washington on August 8, with the participation of the leaders of Azerbaijan, Armenia, and the United States, as a landmark step toward achieving lasting peace in the South Caucasus.
Speaking at a briefing following a government meeting in Ankara on August 11, Erdogan said the region had entered a new stage of development following the liberation of Azerbaijani territories from long-term Armenian occupation.
The Turkish President welcomed the recent lifting of restrictions on Azerbaijan, noting that he had expressed Ankara’s satisfaction to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. “I emphasized that Türkiye will always stand by Azerbaijan,” Erdogan said, adding that he had also discussed the matter with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan earlier in the day.
According to Erdogan, the establishment of peace in the South Caucasus would pave the way for the restoration of road and rail links, the opening of border crossings, and the removal of barriers to free trade — developments he said would benefit all regional states.
He reaffirmed Ankara’s commitment to supporting initiatives that foster peace and stability in the region, stating that Türkiye would “continue its efforts to promote peace and stability” in close coordination with its partners.
