Malaysia’s PM Anwar Ibrahim to Join World Leaders at SCO Summit in Tianjin

Beijing, August 22, 2025 — The Europe Today: Malaysia’s Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will participate alongside more than 20 world leaders at the fifth Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit 2025, scheduled to take place in Tianjin, China, from August 31 to September 1.

China’s Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Bin confirmed on Friday that Russian President Vladimir Putin, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto are also expected to attend.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, along with leaders from nine other international organisations, will join the summit.

Chinese President Xi Jinping will chair the 25th Meeting of the SCO Council of Heads of State and the SCO Plus Meeting, where he is scheduled to deliver keynote speeches, Liu told reporters during a briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Liu described the upcoming event as a pivotal moment in China’s diplomacy, highlighting its role in fostering exchanges and strengthening multilateralism. “The Tianjin Summit will take the SCO into a new phase, promoting greater solidarity, development, humanity, prosperity and progress,” he said.

An official from the Malaysian Embassy in Beijing confirmed that Malaysia will participate in the SCO Plus Meeting.

Established in 2001 in Shanghai by six founding members — China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan — the SCO has since expanded to include 10 members with Pakistan, India, Iran, and Belarus joining. Mongolia and Afghanistan hold observer status, while 13 other countries, including Sri Lanka, Türkiye, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the Maldives, are dialogue partners.
