Rabat, August 24, 2025 – The Europe Today: Morocco has further consolidated its position as the top importer of Spanish natural gas, maintaining the lead in June 2025, according to figures released by the Corporación de Reservas Estratégicas de Productos Petrolíferos (Cores).
In June alone, Morocco imported 858 GWh of natural gas, representing 35.5% of Spain’s total exports. This volume was more than double that of France, which received 354 GWh, or 14.6%. The figures confirm a trend that began in 2024, when Morocco surpassed France for the first time with annual imports of 9,703 GWh, compared to France’s 9,362 GWh.
While Morocco’s share expanded, Spain’s overall natural gas exports declined by 17.1% over the past 12 months, totaling 41,181 GWh. Meanwhile, Spain’s natural gas imports rose to 25,173 GWh in June, marking a 3.7% year-on-year increase. Algeria remains Spain’s largest supplier, providing 43.6% of total imports, but the supply mix is shifting: liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports surged by 19%, while pipeline deliveries dropped by 20.8%.
Morocco’s growing reliance on Spanish gas reflects its wider strategy to diversify energy sources and strengthen supply security. In line with this objective, Rabat is preparing to launch a floating regasification unit at the Nador West Med port, a move set to enhance national energy infrastructure.
At the same time, Morocco is advancing its renewable energy ambitions, aiming for renewables to cover 52% of its electricity mix by 2030. This dual-track approach — combining conventional energy diversification with rapid renewable development — underscores Morocco’s emergence as a pivotal actor in Mediterranean energy cooperation and reinforces its strategic partnership with Spain.
