Vietnam Eradicates Makeshift Housing Nationwide, Five Years Ahead of Schedule

Vietnam

Hanoi, August 26, 2025 – The Europe Today: Vietnam has officially eradicated makeshift and dilapidated housing nationwide, Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính announced on Tuesday at a national conference, declaring the milestone a landmark achievement completed five years earlier than planned.

The Prime Minister, who also chairs the Central Emulation and Commendation Council and heads the National Steering Committee on Housing, described the campaign as a “special national project” reflecting both the will of the Party and the aspirations of the people.

“This is a Vietnamese miracle in sustainable poverty reduction,” Chính said, stressing that for the first time in the nation’s history, no citizen is forced to live in unsafe shelters. The accomplishment fulfills a key target set in Resolution No. 42 of the 13th Party Central Committee, originally scheduled for 2030, but now completed five years and four months early, coinciding with the 80th anniversary of National Day on September 2.

A nationwide effort

Launched in October 2024, the campaign saw the construction or repair of more than 334,230 homes, including over 255,000 new houses, supported by VNĐ24.7 trillion (US$942.6 million) in funding and 2.7 million workdays from volunteers, soldiers, police, enterprises and local communities.

Key contributions came from state institutions, including nearly VNĐ1 trillion and 414,000 workdays from the Ministry of National Defence, more than VNĐ790 billion and half a million workdays from the Ministry of Public Security, and over VNĐ1.8 trillion from the banking sector. The Việt Nam Fatherland Front also mobilized VNĐ125.8 billion through its “For the Poor” fund.

Grassroots initiatives played a vital role, with volunteer motorbike teams in Hà Giang, community work-exchange groups in Lào Cai, and neighborhood solidarity campaigns in Tuyên Quang helping to accelerate construction efforts.

Beneficiaries representing more than 334,000 families expressed gratitude to the Party, State, and local communities for providing secure homes and renewed hope for the future. Quoting President Hồ Chí Minh, the Prime Minister remarked: “Independence means nothing if the people are not happy.”

Beyond housing

While celebrating the success, PM Chính underlined that “a house is only the first step towards stability.” He urged ministries and local authorities to focus on supporting livelihoods, employment, healthcare, and education to ensure lasting prosperity, with the aim of eradicating extreme poverty nationwide by 2030.

He directed the Ministry of Finance to prioritize budget allocations while continuing to mobilize social resources for disadvantaged communities, and called on the armed forces to sustain their leadership role in poverty reduction in remote, border, and island areas by building not only homes but also schools, clinics, and essential infrastructure.

At the conference, 19 collectives received the Third-class Labour Order, while another 19 collectives were awarded Certificates of Merit from the Prime Minister for their outstanding contributions to the campaign.

PM Chính extended his gratitude to all sectors and citizens, calling the achievement a “symbol of the Party’s will and the people’s heart” as Vietnam marks major national anniversaries.
