Turkmenistan, EU Discuss Prospects for High-Level Engagement

Turkmenistan

Brussels, August 28, 2025 – The Europe Today: Turkmenistan’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium, Sapar Palvanov, has held talks with Peteris Ustubs, Director for International Partnerships of the European Commission for Asia and the Pacific, to discuss the prospects of strengthening dialogue and cooperation between Turkmenistan and the European Union.

According to a statement released by the Embassy of Turkmenistan in Belgium on Tuesday, the discussions emphasized the importance of maintaining direct dialogue and explored possibilities for organizing high-level meetings between Turkmenistan’s leadership and EU institutions.

The talks covered a wide range of issues concerning future EU–Central Asia engagement, including bilateral cooperation formats between Turkmenistan and the EU. Preparations for the upcoming EU–Central Asia ministerial meeting in Luxembourg, scheduled for October 20, 2025, featured prominently on the agenda.

The Luxembourg forum will focus on regional connectivity, trade and economic relations, energy partnerships, and digital cooperation. Significantly, the meeting will be held in an expanded format, with the participation of not only EU member states and Central Asian countries, but also neighboring partners such as Turkey, Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan. A similar inclusive approach was successfully applied during the 20th EU–Central Asia Ministerial Meeting convened earlier in Ashgabat.

At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides noted Turkmenistan’s increasing role as a platform for interregional and international initiatives, highlighting its consistent commitment to hosting effective high-level dialogue and advancing practical cooperation.
