Vietnam Assumes ASEAN Committee Chairmanship in Washington, D.C.

Washington, September 01, 2025 – The Europe Today:  Vietnam has officially assumed the rotating chairmanship of the ASEAN Committee in Washington, D.C. (ACW) from Thailand, with a handover ceremony held on August 29 (local time).

During its four-month tenure, Vietnam will preside over a range of collective activities aimed at strengthening cooperation and mutual understanding between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the United States.

Speaking at the event, Vietnamese Ambassador to the U.S. Nguyễn Quốc Dũng commended Thailand for successfully hosting several major initiatives during its chairmanship, including the commemoration of ASEAN Day on August 8. He affirmed that Vietnam would continue to advance the momentum of ACW’s activities and foster substantive engagement with partners.

The ambassador added that Vietnam has prepared several specific initiatives, with further details to be announced in due course.

Upcoming highlights include September celebrations of the National Days of Singapore, Malaysia, and Việt Nam, alongside activities at the United Nations General Assembly and the welcoming of two new ambassadors from Laos and Indonesia. In October, the ACW will mark Timor-Leste’s admission to ASEAN and co-host, with the Malaysian Embassy, a programme on artificial intelligence. November will feature a meeting with U.S. Secretary of Transportation and Acting NASA Administrator Sean Duffy, while December will see joint cultural promotion events showcasing all ASEAN member states in Washington.

Ambassador Dũng expressed hope for continued cooperation from ASEAN colleagues during Việt Nam’s chairmanship.

The ceremony concluded with the symbolic transfer of the ACW gavel and the ASEAN flag, followed by a networking session with representatives of ASEAN embassies and local partners.
