EUReflect had the honor to attend the commemoration of Pakistan Defence Day at the Embassy of Pakistan in Belgium. The event brought together diplomats, military attachés, and members of the international community to pay tribute to Pakistan’s martyrs, while reaffirming the country’s commitment to peace, stability, and regional cooperation.
The ceremony began with a solemn tribute to the fallen heroes of Pakistan, followed by messages from the President and Prime Minister. Both leaders emphasized that the nation’s true strength lies not only in its defense capability, but also in its pursuit of peaceful dialogue, regional stability, and global cooperation. Calls were made for a unified international response to ongoing humanitarian crises, including those in Kashmir and Palestine.
Ambassador Rahim Hayat Qureshi’s Address
In his keynote speech, H.E. Ambassador Rahim Hayat Qureshi described 6 September as a day deeply etched in Pakistan’s collective memory:
“It is my profound honour to welcome you to the Embassy of Pakistan today as we gather to commemorate Pakistan’s Defence Day — a day etched in our nation’s memory as a powerful symbol of courage, unity, and sacrifice.”
He reminded the audience of the historic events of 1965, noting that:
“For Pakistanis across the globe, 6 September is not just a historical milestone. It is a living testament to our nation’s resilience, when the entire country stood united alongside its Armed Forces to defend our sovereignty and territorial integrity against external aggression.”
Paying tribute to those who embraced shahadat in defense of their homeland, the Ambassador stated:
“Their courage against a numerically larger adversary was nothing short of legendary, leaving behind a legacy of heroism that continues to inspire generations. Their ultimate sacrifices are a constant reminder that freedom is never free.”
He also highlighted more recent military operations:
“Our success in Maarka-i-Haq and Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos represents a landmark moment in our history — a testament to unshakable national will, professional excellence, and collective purpose.”
On regional tensions, he warned:
“Our eastern neighbour not only disregarded all norms of inter-State relations, but also openly violated international law by targeting civilians. Pakistan showed great restraint and responsibility, making it a point to target only military sites, destroying critical infrastructure and downing six ace fighter jets, including the famous Rafale.”
Expressing concern over India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, the Ambassador stated:
“It is trying to weaponise water, an unthinkable design that risks further straining an already fragile regional environment. These waters are our life-line, not India’s weapons! The global community must not tolerate this unruly behaviour.”
Concluding his address, he paid tribute to Pakistan’s heroes:
“As we conclude today’s commemoration, let us bow our heads in gratitude to our heroes — from 1965 to the present day — whose sacrifices continue to guide our journey as a nation. May Pakistan always stand strong, united, and sovereign. Pakistan Paindabad.”
Presence of Distinguished Guests
The ceremony was attended by defense attachés from Azerbaijan, the United States, South Africa, as well as a visiting Chinese military delegation, reflecting the diverse international interest in Pakistan’s role in regional security.
EUReflect’s Perspective
At EUReflect, we view commemorations such as Pakistan Defence Day as more than symbolic gestures. They are moments to reflect on how national narratives, regional conflicts, and global security concerns intersect. Pakistan’s emphasis on peace alongside its demonstration of military capability illustrates the delicate balance many nations in conflict-prone regions must navigate.
As the Ambassador noted, South Asia today faces increasing strategic volatility. EUReflect echoes the call for stronger regional mechanisms for dialogue, equitable access to resources, and sustainable security frameworks.
We remain committed to amplifying voices that work toward peace, justice, and mutual understanding, while fostering space for constructive dialogue across nations.
Pakistan Paindabad.
