Hanoi, September 19, 2025 — The Europe Today: State President Lương Cường on Thursday hosted a reception for Pauline Tamesis, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Việt Nam, along with heads of UN agencies in the country, ahead of his departure to New York to attend the High-level General Debate of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
President Cường expressed satisfaction with the strong growth of Việt Nam–UN cooperation, affirming that the UN has always been a close companion in the nation’s development journey. He highly appreciated the role and support of UN agencies in helping Việt Nam achieve its development goals, citing their contributions in pandemic response, socio-economic recovery, climate change adaptation, disaster relief — most recently during Typhoon Yagi — and in promoting a just energy transition.
Outlining Việt Nam’s long-term vision, the President reiterated the country’s two centenary goals: becoming an upper-middle-income nation with a modern industrial base by 2030 and a high-income developed country by 2045. He underscored key priorities including international integration, green growth, science and technology advancement, innovation, digital transformation, private sector development, legal reform, education, training, and universal healthcare. He called on the UN to continue supporting Việt Nam through policy consultancy, scientific cooperation, and capacity-building.
Regarding the upcoming UN General Assembly debate, President Cường emphasized its significance as it coincides with both the 80th anniversary of the UN and Việt Nam’s 80th National Day. He noted that both milestones symbolize a spirit of reform and renewal to address contemporary challenges. He added that Việt Nam’s key messages at the debate will highlight its journey of overcoming hardship, post-war recovery, integration into the international community, and a call for nations to uphold peace and take bold action for a sustainable future.
Reaffirming Việt Nam’s strong support for multilateralism and the UN’s central role in global governance, the President pledged that the country will continue contributing actively and responsibly to global peace, stability, cooperation, and development. He welcomed the UN80 initiative of the Secretary-General, affirmed Việt Nam’s support for bold reforms, and said the country stands ready to host additional UN agencies and centres.
President Cường also reiterated Việt Nam’s commitment to international climate pledges, including implementation of the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), and voiced support for the UN’s role in shaping global governance on artificial intelligence. He invited close cooperation with the UN in preparation for the upcoming visit of Secretary-General António Guterres and the planned signing ceremony of the UN Convention on Cybercrime in Hà Nội this October.
For her part, Pauline Tamesis praised Việt Nam’s strong leadership and commitment to multilateralism, noting that the 80th UN General Assembly marks a pivotal moment for promoting international cooperation on peace, development, and human rights. She commended Việt Nam’s impressive achievements in poverty reduction, socio-economic development, institutional reform, gender equality, and inclusive growth, while also recognizing its forward-looking policies on digital transformation, energy security, education, and healthcare.
She affirmed that the UN will continue to accompany and support Việt Nam in advancing sustainable development, addressing climate change, promoting gender equality, and realizing its strategic development goals.
