Vienna, September 20, 2025 – The Europe Today: A delegation of Turkmenistan, led by Deputy Minister of Health and Medical Industry Mr. Azat Ovezov, participated in the 69th regular session of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), held from September 15 to 19 in Vienna.

In its national statement, the Turkmen side underlined priority areas of cooperation with the IAEA and outlined forthcoming projects in the fields of food security, water resource management, and healthcare. Particular attention was drawn to the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the United Nations’ recognition of Turkmenistan’s permanent neutrality in 2025.

As part of the visit, the Turkmen delegation held a meeting with IAEA Deputy Director General Mr. Liu Hua. The discussions focused on collaboration under the IAEA Technical Cooperation Programme, including the development of nuclear medicine, national infrastructure for the peaceful use of atomic energy, radioactive waste management, as well as Turkmenistan’s participation in current and prospective technical projects of the Agency.

Special emphasis was placed on the results of the recently conducted imPACT Review Mission, jointly organized by the IAEA and the World Health Organization (WHO). The mission assessed Turkmenistan’s national cancer control programmes, commended the country’s achievements in this field, and identified priority directions for further cooperation.

On September 16, the Turkmen delegation also took part in the Scientific Forum held within the framework of the IAEA General Conference. This year’s theme, “Atoms for Water,” highlighted the application of nuclear and isotopic technologies in tackling global challenges related to water resource management, safe drinking water access, and sustainable water supply in the face of climate change.
