Syrian Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa Arrives in Washington for UN General Assembly

Washington

Washington, September 21, 2025 — The Europe Today: Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa has arrived in the United States to attend the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, marking the first official visit by a Syrian leader to Washington since 1967, media reports said.

Al-Sharaa is accompanied by four ministers on the visit, which is anticipated to provide an opportunity to discuss the restoration of diplomatic ties between Syria and the United States, including the reopening of the Syrian embassy in Washington.

According to reports, al-Sharaa is scheduled to address the UN General Assembly on September 24. Media representatives noted that preparations are underway for a meeting between US President Donald Trump and the Syrian leader on the sidelines of the session.

Earlier this year, on May 14, President Trump held talks with al-Sharaa in Riyadh, where he announced Washington’s intention to begin lifting decades-old sanctions on Damascus. Subsequently, on July 1, Trump signed an executive order formally ending unilateral sanctions against Syria.
