Fez, September 25, 2025 – The Europe Today: The United States has taken concrete steps to translate its recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara into action through economic cooperation projects.
In a significant statement, US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau announced that Washington is working to boost investment in Morocco’s southern provinces, aligning with the recognition granted by the United States. Landau made the remarks following a meeting with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita in New York on Wednesday, held on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
“The United States has recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, and as part of the Trump administration’s global initiatives to promote economic and trade diplomacy, we are pleased to encourage American companies that wish to invest in this region of Morocco,” Landau told reporters.
The two officials also discussed the longstanding and strategic partnership between Morocco and the United States, emphasizing cooperation in advancing prosperity, peace, and stability in the region.
The announcement underscores Washington’s continued support for Morocco’s territorial integrity, building on the historic decision made in December 2020 when the United States formally recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara. That move reshaped the dynamics of the long-standing dispute and has since strengthened Rabat’s international legitimacy regarding its southern provinces.
US officials, including members of Congress, have repeatedly reaffirmed the country’s position, consolidating the recognition as a cornerstone of American policy in the region.
