Morocco Defeat Brazil to Reach U20 World Cup Round of 16

U20 World Cup

Santiago, October 2, 2025 – The Europe Today: Morocco’s U20 national football team secured a place in the round of 16 at the FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile after defeating Brazil 2-1 in their second group-stage match.

After a goalless first half in which goalkeeper Yanis Benchawch produced three vital saves and a potential Brazilian penalty was overturned by VAR for simulation, Morocco took control in the second half.

The breakthrough came in the 60th minute when Othmane Maamma volleyed home a precise cross from Gessime Yassine. Just minutes later, Yassine turned provider again, threading a through ball to Yassir Zabiri, whose strike deflected into the net to double Morocco’s lead.

Brazil reduced the deficit in the 90th minute through a penalty converted by Iago Teodoro, but Morocco held firm to claim victory and book their spot in the knockout stage.

Coach Mohamed Wahbi’s side will face Mexico in their final group game on Saturday, October 4, at 21:00 GMT+1.

Spain held by Mexico
In other Group C action, Spain’s U20 side were held to a 2-2 draw by Mexico, continuing their difficult campaign. Gilberto Mora opened the scoring for Mexico in the 32nd minute, before Pablo Garcia equalised for Spain ten minutes later.

Iker Bravo’s 80th-minute penalty briefly put Spain ahead, but Mora struck again seven minutes later to secure a point for Mexico.

After two matches, Morocco lead Group C with six points, followed by Mexico on two, Brazil on one, and Spain at the bottom with a single point.
