Malaysia to Consider Pakistan’s Proposal to Export US$200 Million Worth of Beef

Malaysia

Putrajaya, October 7, 2025 – The Europe Today: The Malaysian government will consider Pakistan’s proposal to export up to US$200 million (RM843.1 million) worth of beef to Malaysia, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced following his meeting with Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif in Putrajaya on Monday.

Speaking at a joint press conference at Perdana Putra — the Prime Minister’s Office — Anwar said the proposal was raised by Muhammad Shehbaz during his official visit to Malaysia, which began on Sunday night.

“We will facilitate this, of course, and as I have said, I assured that this will be priced competitively. I will certainly do what is necessary; you mentioned up to US$200 million worth,” Anwar said, glancing at the visiting Prime Minister.

Anwar emphasized that the initiative is part of broader efforts to enhance agricultural collaboration between Malaysia and Pakistan.

He added that Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz had also proposed enhancing cooperation in several sectors, including Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), the Electrical and Electronics industry, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), and the semiconductor sector.

“Pakistan is among the Muslim countries that were clearly far ahead in these fields; therefore, the potential is there,” Anwar said, noting that Malaysia and Pakistan have maintained friendly relations since 1957.

He highlighted that despite global geopolitical uncertainties, there remain significant opportunities for cooperation in defence, culture, energy, digital technologies, and emerging sectors.

Following Anwar’s remarks, Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif described the discussions as productive and wide-ranging, covering bilateral relations and regional developments.

“I am very happy that our views converge on almost all important issues,” he said, expressing gratitude to Anwar for considering Pakistan’s beef export proposal.

Muhammad Shehbaz assured that Pakistan would fully comply with Malaysia’s halal certification and market regulations, stating:

“We will make all possible efforts to meet your terms and conditions. God willing, we will achieve not only the quota of US$200 million, but in time, it will increase because when consumers are happy, the sky is the limit.”

Earlier, both leaders witnessed the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering cooperation in higher education, tourism, halal certification, and anti-corruption efforts.

Another MoU was signed between Pakistan’s Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) and SME Corporation Malaysia, while an Exchange of Notes was concluded between the Institute of Diplomacy and Foreign Relations (Malaysia) and the Foreign Service Academy of Pakistan to enhance diplomatic training cooperation.

After the press conference, Anwar hosted a luncheon at Seri Perdana in honour of Muhammad Shehbaz. Both leaders later attended the Malaysia-Pakistan Business and Investment Conference in Kuala Lumpur.

Earlier in the day, Muhammad Shehbaz was accorded a formal welcome ceremony at Dataran Perdana, where he inspected a guard of honour mounted by officers and members of the Royal Malay Regiment.

During the visit, he presented Anwar with an Urdu-language edition of the book “SCRIPT: For a Better Malaysia.”

Muhammad Shehbaz is undertaking a three-day official visit to Malaysia — his first since assuming office.

In 2024, total trade between Malaysia and Pakistan reached RM8.07 billion, marking a 25.5 per cent increase from the previous year.
