JakartaOctober 26, 2025 – The Europe Today: Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto received a warm welcome from Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim upon his arrival at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre on Sunday to attend the opening ceremony of the 47th ASEAN Summit.

President Prabowo arrived at 8:20 a.m. local time, dressed in a grey suit and wearing a traditional black cap, according to a live broadcast from Bernama TV’s official YouTube channel.

As the host of this year’s ASEAN Summit, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim greeted President Prabowo with a warm embrace and a friendly handshake, reflecting the close and cordial relations between the two neighboring nations. The two leaders were seen sharing a lively conversation and posing together for photographs before the assembled media.

Following the welcoming exchange, President Prabowo joined fellow ASEAN leaders inside the summit hall, including Timor-Leste President José Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, as Timor-Leste was set to be formally admitted as ASEAN’s 11th member state — a historic milestone for the regional bloc.

The 47th ASEAN Summit is also being attended by several distinguished guests, including United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, European Council President António Costa, and leaders from ASEAN’s dialogue partners such as U.S. President Donald Trump, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The summit agenda includes 25 key meetings focused on strengthening regional economic cooperation, advancing clean energy transitions, and accelerating the development of the digital economy. One of the major issues under discussion is the potential use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes within the framework of an integrated ASEAN power grid.

Beyond internal matters, ASEAN leaders are expected to deliberate on pressing global issues, including the ongoing situation in Gaza and the bloc’s unified approach to promoting peace and humanitarian relief efforts in the region.

The 47th ASEAN Summit is anticipated to result in a strong regional consensus aimed at bolstering cooperation, stability, and prosperity across Southeast Asia and beyond.
