Araghchi Hails Iran’s Election to CWC Executive Council as “Meaningful Step” Toward a World Free of Chemical Weapons

The HagueNovember 27, 2025 – The Europe Today: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has described the country’s unanimous election to the Executive Council of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) as a “meaningful step” for all nations committed to a world without chemical weapons.

In a post on his X account on Tuesday, Araghchi reflected on the development shortly after attending the 30th annual Conference of the States Parties to the CWC in The Hague.

“Iran’s unanimous election to the CWC Executive Council marks a meaningful step for all who believe in a world free of chemical weapons,” he wrote. He noted that Iran continues to bear the painful legacy of Saddam Hussein’s chemical attacks during the 1980–1988 imposed war, which left enduring physical and psychological wounds on tens of thousands of victims and their families.

Araghchi highlighted that he was accompanied at the Conference by Kamal Hosseinpour, a member of parliament representing Sardasht — the first city in the world to be targeted with chemical weapons in an aerial attack. He said the presence of Hosseinpour was a reminder of the “resistance, suffering, and call for justice” embodied by the people of Sardasht, who still face the lingering consequences of those attacks, compounded by U.S. sanctions that limit access to essential medicines and medical care.

“The truth must prevail, and those who supported Saddam’s chemical weapons program must be held responsible,” the foreign minister stressed, reiterating Iran’s longstanding position on accountability and justice.

Iran’s election to the CWC Executive Council reinforces its role in global disarmament efforts, particularly in advocating for the complete elimination of chemical weapons and upholding the principles of international law.
