Prabowo Urges Environmental Education in Schools

Jakarta, November 28, 2025 – The Europe Today: Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on Friday called on teachers across the country to integrate environmental education into school curricula as part of efforts to enhance student awareness of climate change and the protection of natural resources.

Addressing the National Teachers Day commemoration in Jakarta, President Prabowo underscored that climate change, global warming, and environmental degradation are among the most pressing global challenges, requiring stronger public understanding from an early age.

He emphasized that schools should strengthen lessons on forest conservation, river preservation, and measures to curb illegal logging and land degradation. Instilling such knowledge, he said, is essential for ensuring that future generations understand the long-term consequences of environmental neglect.

The president highlighted the importance of teaching students how clean rivers help mitigate sudden water surges and how healthy forests reduce disaster risks. Environmental stewardship, he stressed, must become a shared national responsibility.

President Prabowo also addressed the recent floods and landslides that struck Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra following extreme weather earlier this week. He said the government is expediting assistance delivery to affected communities, though poor weather and damaged infrastructure continue to hamper relief efforts. Helicopters and aircraft have at times been unable to land safely due to fog, heavy rainfall, and unstable terrain.

To support emergency operations, Prabowo instructed the Indonesian Air Force to deploy four transport aircraft — three Hercules and one A400M — to deliver humanitarian aid to the nearest operational airports in the affected provinces.

Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya noted that Friday’s aid flights were not the first, emphasizing that President Prabowo had ordered the immediate deployment of all relevant teams when the disasters occurred on November 25.

He said the latest shipments included tents, inflatable boats, generators, communication equipment, signal boosters, medical teams, essential medicines, ready-to-eat meals, blankets, and other supplies requested by local authorities.

Wijaya added that weather-modification operations had been conducted in an effort to reduce rainfall intensity, though conditions remain difficult for rescue and logistics teams working in isolated areas.
