Indonesia Commits US$1 Billion as It Joins BRICS’ New Development Bank

Indonesia

Jakarta, December 1, 2025 – The Europe Today: Indonesia has pledged an initial investment of US$1 billion as it formally joins the New Development Bank (NDB), marking a significant step in deepening its engagement with the BRICS-led financial institution.

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto announced the development on Monday, stating that Indonesia’s membership underscores its commitment to strengthening cooperation among Global South nations in line with the spirit of the historic Asia-Africa Conference.

“Indonesia becomes a member and is immediately participating actively in the preparations of the NDB,” Hartarto said, emphasizing the country’s readiness to contribute to global development financing platforms.

Hartarto added that joining the NDB will broaden Indonesia’s market access and enhance collaboration with major emerging economies, particularly in areas of development funding and infrastructure.

In parallel, Indonesia is advancing its economic diplomacy on multiple fronts. The country is preparing to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) in 2026, alongside Mexico and Peru.

Steady progress is also being made in Indonesia’s bid to join the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), with 34 of the 37 member states expressing support for its accession.

Following the conclusion of the Indonesia-EU Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA) in September 2025, Indonesia aims to secure full OECD membership by 2027, Hartarto affirmed.
