National Leader Heydar Aliyev Honoured in Washington Commemoration

Washington, December 13, 2025 – The Europe Today: A commemorative event marking the 22nd anniversary of the passing of National Leader Heydar Aliyev was held at George Washington University in the United States, organized by the Azerbaijani Embassy in Washington.

The gathering brought together Azerbaijani officials, members of the Azerbaijani community in the U.S., and Azerbaijani students studying in the country. The ceremony began with a minute of silence in memory of the National Leader.

Addressing the audience, Khazar Ibrahim, Azerbaijani Ambassador to the U.S., highlighted Heydar Aliyev’s pivotal contributions to strengthening relations between Azerbaijan and the United States. He noted that the Washington Summit on August 8 marked the beginning of a new era in bilateral ties.

Hafiz Pashayev, Rector of ADA University, spoke about Heydar Aliyev’s farsighted vision, describing him as an outstanding diplomat. Parviz Shahbazov, Azerbaijan’s Minister of Energy, underscored the National Leader’s critical role in signing landmark energy and oil agreements.

Samad Seyidov, Member of Parliament and head of the Azerbaijan–U.S. interparliamentary working group, emphasized that the agreements signed with the United States remain among Heydar Aliyev’s most significant achievements, noting that Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev continues to pursue this policy.

The event also featured the screening of the documentary “Iz” (Trace), produced by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, alongside a photo exhibition highlighting the National Leader’s visits to the United States, celebrating his enduring legacy and contributions to Azerbaijan–U.S. relations.
