Turkmenistan Lights Main New Year’s Tree in Ashgabat Ahead of Holiday Celebrations

Ashgabat, December 16, 2025 – The Europe Today: The lights of Turkmenistan’s main New Year’s tree were ceremonially switched on in the capital, Ashgabat, marking the start of the festive season across the country, state media reported on Monday.

The traditional celebration took place in the square in front of the Älem cultural and entertainment center, where a tall New Year’s tree, adorned with colorful lights and festive ornaments, became the focal point of the event. Large numbers of residents and visitors gathered to witness the ceremony and take part in the celebrations.

The holiday program featured performances by folk music and dance ensembles, along with theatrical shows showcasing fairy-tale characters, creating a lively and family-friendly atmosphere.

As part of the festivities, the traditional New Year figures Ayazbaba and Garpamyk greeted children and distributed New Year’s gifts, adding to the sense of joy and celebration.

On the same day, New Year’s tree lights were also illuminated in other cities and districts across Turkmenistan, signaling the beginning of nationwide New Year celebrations and cultural events in the lead-up to the holiday.
