Kazakh President Expands National Security Committee’s Powers to Strengthen Information Security

Astana, December 26, 2025 – The Europe Today: Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on Thursday signed a decree introducing measures to improve public administration, granting expanded powers to the National Security Committee (KNB), according to media reports.

Under the decree, the National Security Committee is vested with additional powers and functions previously held by the Ministry of Digital Development, Innovation and Aerospace Industry, particularly in the area of state control over informatization. The expanded mandate specifically covers ensuring the information security of critical information and communications infrastructure assets.

In accordance with the document, the Government, in coordination with the National Security Committee, has been instructed to prepare the necessary legislative amendments and adopt practical measures required to implement the decree.

The National Security Committee has also been tasked with submitting draft amendments and additions to its regulatory framework to the President for consideration. Oversight of the implementation of the decree has been assigned to the Presidential Administration.

The decree entered into force on the date of its signing.
