Petaling Jaya, January 2, 2026 – The Europe Today: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Friday called on local councils nationwide to ensure greater transparency and orderliness in the management of Ramadan bazaars, highlighting Petaling Jaya as a model for fair and efficient administration.

Speaking to reporters after Friday prayers at Masjid Jumhuriah in Taman Dato’ Harun on January 2, Anwar praised Petaling Jaya’s transparent approach, which includes the use of online registration systems to prevent exploitation by middlemen and to ensure equitable access for traders.

“Ramadan provides opportunities for citizens, particularly those from lower-income groups, to operate small businesses and earn additional income,” the prime minister said.

He emphasized the need for close cooperation among municipal councils to guarantee a smooth and fair process for traders, while preventing profiteering through commissions. Although reforms are being introduced at higher levels, Anwar acknowledged that challenges persist at the grassroots.

The prime minister recommended that best practices adopted in Petaling Jaya—such as maximizing the number of available stalls and maintaining cleanliness and well-equipped facilities—be implemented nationwide.

He added that, with collaboration between municipalities and state governments, he would engage the Ministry of Housing and Local Government to help improve facilities at Ramadan bazaars, including water supply and sanitation services.

On environmental enforcement, Anwar reminded the public that the anti-littering law came into effect on January 1, warning that improper disposal of waste would lead to prosecution and fines.
