Indonesia to Renovate 60,000 Schools in 2026, Says President Prabowo

Indonesia

Jakarta, January 13, 2026 – The Europe Today:  President Prabowo Subianto has announced that Indonesia will carry out large-scale renovations at 60,000 schools in 2026, underscoring his administration’s commitment to upgrading education infrastructure nationwide as a key pillar of long-term development.

Indonesia has approximately 300,000 schools, and the government aims to renovate all of them within four years, the president said while speaking at the inauguration of Malang Taruna Nusantara High School, which was broadcast on Tuesday.

President Prabowo emphasized that education is central to national progress, playing a decisive role in developing human capital, strengthening social mobility and improving public welfare across the archipelago. He said the renovation programme is designed to ensure that students study in safe, comfortable and supportive environments conducive to academic excellence and character building.

“Education is an instrument of development, an instrument of welfare and an instrument of democracy,” the president said, adding that education and health are key instruments in efforts to eradicate poverty.

Beyond school renovations, the government plans to establish at least one top-tier school in every province, either under the Taruna Nusantara system or the Garuda High School model. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to nurture future national leaders and reduce disparities in access to quality education between regions.

To achieve this objective, the government plans to expand Taruna Nusantara High Schools and construct at least 20 Garuda High Schools across the country. These flagship institutions are intended to set national benchmarks, featuring modern facilities, robust curricula and wide geographic coverage to broaden access to high-quality education.

Meanwhile, State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi said the government is consistently advancing the development of Taruna Nusantara campuses, including existing locations in Malang, Cimahi and Indonesia’s future capital, Nusantara. He added that construction is also under way at three additional sites, including in North Sulawesi and South Sumatra, as part of efforts to accelerate education development nationwide.
